A game made for NYU's Game Design course in Spring 2023. 

The central premise for this game was "Game Characteristics".  We had to make a game prototype and include several game characteristics. 
The characteristics are listed below:

  •  Playtime Length
    • Round-based playtime
      • Each round presents varying challenges with increased difficulty
        • Stronger enemies
        • More frequent enemies
      • Upgrades in between rounds
      • Different round types
        • Combat
        • Survival
    • Session-based playtime
      • Dying is learning
        • Learn new strategies against enemies/hazards
        • Improve their mechanical abilities
  • Heuristics
    • Control the center of the map
      • More room to dodge
      • Less likely to fall into water and lose
    • Avoid the edges of map if possible
      • Enemy/Hazards easily knocks player back into water
      • Less room to dodge
    • HOWEVER Risky Strategy -> Reward
      • Edges of the map are also hazardous to enemies so the player might want to go to the edge to knock out troublesome enemies sooner.
  • Dexterity vs. Strategy
    • Dexterity:
      • Player continuously combat enemies and maneuver through obstacles during each round.
    • Strategy:
      • In between each round, players strategize on which upgrades to take to help them progress further.
      • During rounds players must take into account the animations of the enemies and obstacles in order to read and dodge them perfectly
  • Stochasticity vs. Observability vs. Time Granularity
    • Stochasticity:
      • Non-deterministic: The types of upgrades offered in between rounds are not the same. 
      • Deterministic: Upgrades of the same type always give the same boost.
    • Observability:
      • Known: The player’s stats such as health and movement speed are known to them.
      • Unknown: The types of enemies and hazards they will face is unknown to them on the first playthrough.
    • Time granularity:
      • Real-time: Players need to act quickly as the rounds continuously throw enemies and hazards at them
      • Turn-based: In between rounds, players can take as long as they need to choose their upgrades.
